Installing a 100-Inch TV: What It Really Takes

130+ lbs of 4K screen on a stacked stone fireplace wall. MKR Systems installs 100-inch TVs in San Diego. Free on-site estimate. Estimate #1090: $5,855.83 total. 888-382-5164.

These photos are from a completed MKR Systems project in the San Diego area. The wall is stacked travertine stone over a concrete masonry substrate — no wood studs accessible from the surface. The fireplace is a linear electric unit recessed into the stone column. Every anchor, every cable, and every clearance measurement in this installation was engineered before a single drill touched the stone.

A 100-inch TV weighs over 130 lbs. The mount, anchors, and wall substrate must support 5× that load — 650 lbs minimum. This is not a job for a single installer with a stud finder.

Glare, Reflections, and Why Tilt Is Not Optional Above a Fireplace

Sanus Advanced Tilt 4D · 12° Down
A 12° tilt eliminates
glare, reflections, and neck strain
in a single adjustment
  • Sunlight from windows — San Diego homes typically have large south or west-facing windows. Without tilt, afternoon sun hits a flat-mounted screen at a low angle and washes it out entirely. 12° of downward tilt shifts the panel face away from that light path.
  • Overhead lighting and skylights — Recessed ceiling lights, pendant fixtures, and skylights all create specular reflections on an untilted screen. Tilt redirects the reflection angle below the viewer's eye line.
  • Fireplace glow — A lit linear fireplace below the TV creates upward-angled light that reflects on the lower portion of the screen. Tilt reduces this dramatically.
  • Ergonomic viewing angle — A TV mounted above a fireplace is typically 6–12" above the ideal seated eye level. Tilt compensates so the viewer looks at the screen straight-on — preventing neck strain during extended viewing.
  • 4D adjustment precision — The Sanus VDLT17-B1 tilts left-right as well as forward-back. In rooms where the primary seating is offset from the TV centerline, lateral tilt corrects the viewing angle without repositioning the mount.

What Is Behind Your Wall, and Why It Changes the Anchor Strategy

The wall surface is what you see. The substrate is what the anchor actually holds. For a 100-inch, 130-lb TV, the substrate is the only thing that matters — and it determines the anchor type, the installation time, and whether a blocking plate is required.

Wall Type What's Behind It Anchor Strategy Complexity
Drywall over wood studs 2×4 or 2×6 framing at 16" or 24" on center Lag screws into studs. Blocking plate if VESA pattern doesn't align with stud spacing. Standard
Stacked / ledger stone veneer
(this project)
Stone tiles over concrete board or drywall — substrate may or may not have accessible studs Diamond drill through stone → masonry anchors into substrate. Blocking plate distributes load across multiple studs. Required for 100" TVs. Advanced
Travertine / marble slab Solid stone slab over mortar bed Diamond core drill. Wedge anchors into mortar/substrate. Load test all points. 5× weight rating required. Expert
Brick or concrete block Solid masonry — no wood studs Hammer drill + masonry bits. Sleeve anchors or wedge anchors. Minimum 4 points at 200 lbs each. Advanced
Plaster over lath Old construction — plaster over wood lath, studs often irregular spacing Locate studs with deep-scan finder. Lag into studs. Avoid plaster-only anchors for TVs over 50 lbs. Advanced
Steel stud / commercial drywall Metal framing — common in condos, commercial spaces Toggle bolts or structural blocking between studs. Steel studs cannot accept lag screws for heavy loads alone. Advanced

Why the Free On-Site Assessment Exists

No installer can tell you what anchoring strategy is correct from a photo or a phone call. Wall substrate, stud spacing, fireplace clearance, cable routing path, and viewing geometry must all be assessed in person — before a quote is issued and before a drill touches the wall. MKR Systems provides this assessment at no charge, anywhere in San Diego County. It is the only responsible way to quote a 100-inch installation.

Free On-Site Estimate — We Come to You

We visit your location, assess the wall substrate, check fireplace clearance, and identify the right mount and anchor strategy — before we quote anything.

Outdoor Patio TV on Pink Marble · Pool View · Heatilator Fireplace

MKR Systems outdoor patio TV installation in progress — pink marble fireplace wall, two Gorilla Ladders, large format TV mounted During Installation
MKR Systems completed outdoor patio TV installation — large TV on pink marble wall above Heatilator fireplace, pool view, San Diego Completed

This outdoor installation presented every challenge simultaneously: pink quartzite marble (non-uniform, requires pressure-adjusted diamond drilling), a Heatilator gas fireplace requiring heat clearance testing, full southern California sun exposure requiring UV-rated hardware, and a pool view that created glare from water reflection at specific times of day. The Sanus Advanced Tilt 4D was adjusted post-install to eliminate the pool-surface reflection that appeared on the lower third of the screen during afternoon hours. Two Gorilla Ladders, a 2-person crew, and a 4-hour installation window.

Every Step of a 100-Inch TV Installation — No Hidden Costs

  • Pre-installation wall assessment — substrate identification, stud location, load path verification, fireplace clearance measurement
  • Structural blocking installation if required — load-distribution plate anchored to framing behind stone or masonry surfaces
  • Mount installation with commercial-grade anchors — torqued to spec, pull-tested before TV is hung
  • 2-person TV lift and hang — 130-lb TVs are never a single-person job. Both installers are on-site for the lift, always.
  • Cable management — HDMI, power, and audio routed per agreed plan. Surface raceway or in-wall conduit as assessed during free estimate.
  • Tilt calibration — final tilt angle set with digital level and verified against seated eye line. Sanus 4D adjusted for left-right level after hang.
  • All sources connected and tested — streaming device, soundbar, HDMI switch, Apple TV, or other sources connected and verified operational.
  • !
Not included: electrical outlet relocation (requires licensed electrician), new in-wall conduit through masonry (quoted separately after on-site assessment), soundbar mounting (available as add-on)

What San Diego Homeowners Ask About 100-Inch TV Installation

What does the free on-site estimate include — and is it really free?

Yes, completely free. MKR Systems visits your location, walks through the installation site, identifies the wall substrate, assesses fireplace clearance, maps the cable routing path, and discusses your TV and mount preferences. You receive a written itemized estimate the same day. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to proceed. Call 888-382-5164 to schedule.

How does the Sanus Advanced Tilt 4D eliminate glare in a San Diego home?

San Diego's southern exposure means afternoon sunlight enters most living rooms at a low angle — exactly the angle that reflects off a flat-mounted TV screen. The Sanus VDLT17-B1 allows up to 15° of downward tilt, which rotates the panel face away from that light path. The 4D capability means left-right tilt can also correct for pool-surface reflections or offset window glare that single-axis mounts cannot address. MKR Systems calibrates the final tilt angle on every installation using seated eye-line measurement.

Can a 100-inch TV be mounted on a stacked stone fireplace wall?

Yes — and we have done it multiple times in San Diego. The key requirement is a structural blocking plate installed behind the stone veneer, anchored to the wall framing. The stone surface itself cannot be the load-bearing element for a 130-lb TV. MKR Systems drills through the stone with diamond bits, installs the blocking plate into the substrate, and mounts the bracket to the plate — distributing the load correctly across the wall framing.

Is the Samsung QN80F 100-inch the right TV for a San Diego outdoor patio?

The Samsung QN80F is designed for indoor installation. For outdoor patios with full or partial sun exposure, MKR Systems recommends Samsung The Terrace (IP56-rated) or SunBrite displays rated for outdoor environments. For covered patios with limited direct sun, the QN80F can be used with appropriate consideration. This is assessed during the free on-site estimate based on your specific patio exposure conditions.
