TV Off — True Scale
Full Room Context
These photos are from a completed MKR Systems project in the San Diego area. The wall is stacked travertine stone over a concrete masonry substrate — no wood studs accessible from the surface. The fireplace is a linear electric unit recessed into the stone column. Every anchor, every cable, and every clearance measurement in this installation was engineered before a single drill touched the stone.
A 100-inch TV weighs over 130 lbs. The mount, anchors, and wall substrate must support 5× that load — 650 lbs minimum. This is not a job for a single installer with a stud finder.
The Mount: Why It Matters as Much as the TV
Note: The Sanus VDLT17-B1 is rated for TVs up to 90". For 100" displays exceeding its rating, MKR Systems uses the Strong Carbon Fixed Mount rated for 100" TVs at $299 — as specified in Estimate #1090 for the Samsung QN80F project. Mount selection is determined by TV size and weight during the free on-site assessment.
The 12-Degree Tilt: Why It Changes Everything
Wall Substrate — The Decision That Determines Everything
The wall surface is what you see. The substrate is what the anchor actually holds. For a 100-inch, 130-lb TV, the substrate is the only thing that matters — and it determines the anchor type, the installation time, and whether a blocking plate is required.
| Wall Type | What's Behind It | Anchor Strategy | Complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drywall over wood studs | 2×4 or 2×6 framing at 16" or 24" on center | Lag screws into studs. Blocking plate if VESA pattern doesn't align with stud spacing. | Standard |
| Stacked / ledger stone veneer (this project) |
Stone tiles over concrete board or drywall — substrate may or may not have accessible studs | Diamond drill through stone → masonry anchors into substrate. Blocking plate distributes load across multiple studs. Required for 100" TVs. | Advanced |
| Travertine / marble slab | Solid stone slab over mortar bed | Diamond core drill. Wedge anchors into mortar/substrate. Load test all points. 5× weight rating required. | Expert |
| Brick or concrete block | Solid masonry — no wood studs | Hammer drill + masonry bits. Sleeve anchors or wedge anchors. Minimum 4 points at 200 lbs each. | Advanced |
| Plaster over lath | Old construction — plaster over wood lath, studs often irregular spacing | Locate studs with deep-scan finder. Lag into studs. Avoid plaster-only anchors for TVs over 50 lbs. | Advanced |
| Steel stud / commercial drywall | Metal framing — common in condos, commercial spaces | Toggle bolts or structural blocking between studs. Steel studs cannot accept lag screws for heavy loads alone. | Advanced |
No installer can tell you what anchoring strategy is correct from a photo or a phone call. Wall substrate, stud spacing, fireplace clearance, cable routing path, and viewing geometry must all be assessed in person — before a quote is issued and before a drill touches the wall. MKR Systems provides this assessment at no charge, anywhere in San Diego County. It is the only responsible way to quote a 100-inch installation.

Outdoor AV — Same Project, Different Challenge
During Installation
Completed
This outdoor installation presented every challenge simultaneously: pink quartzite marble (non-uniform, requires pressure-adjusted diamond drilling), a Heatilator gas fireplace requiring heat clearance testing, full southern California sun exposure requiring UV-rated hardware, and a pool view that created glare from water reflection at specific times of day. The Sanus Advanced Tilt 4D was adjusted post-install to eliminate the pool-surface reflection that appeared on the lower third of the screen during afternoon hours. Two Gorilla Ladders, a 2-person crew, and a 4-hour installation window.

San Diego's southern exposure means afternoon sunlight enters most living rooms at a low angle — exactly the angle that reflects off a flat-mounted TV screen. The Sanus VDLT17-B1 allows up to 15° of downward tilt, which rotates the panel face away from that light path. The 4D capability means left-right tilt can also correct for pool-surface reflections or offset window glare that single-axis mounts cannot address. MKR Systems calibrates the final tilt angle on every installation using seated eye-line measurement.
Yes — and we have done it multiple times in San Diego. The key requirement is a structural blocking plate installed behind the stone veneer, anchored to the wall framing. The stone surface itself cannot be the load-bearing element for a 130-lb TV. MKR Systems drills through the stone with diamond bits, installs the blocking plate into the substrate, and mounts the bracket to the plate — distributing the load correctly across the wall framing.
The Samsung QN80F is designed for indoor installation. For outdoor patios with full or partial sun exposure, MKR Systems recommends Samsung The Terrace (IP56-rated) or SunBrite displays rated for outdoor environments. For covered patios with limited direct sun, the QN80F can be used with appropriate consideration. This is assessed during the free on-site estimate based on your specific patio exposure conditions.
